In today's society, people tend to make assumptions about topics they do not know about. Mental Health is one of these topics. Many people do not know exactly what it is, they just look at a person with a mental health issue as something being wrong with them. Mental Health is a very vague topic, and there are a lot of subtopics that go along with it.
Before getting hired at a facility working with people that have mental health illnesses, I was very unaware of the specifics of Mental Health. I knew the general gist of what it was, but I didn't understand fully until being educated and trained.
So... What is Mental Health?
Mental Health deals with our social, emotional and psychological health. It affects everything a person does. It can affect decisions, feelings, and even relationships. People that have mental health problems experience mood changes, changes in their thinking and changes in their behavior. Factors that can affect mental health are
- Genes or brain chemistry
- Trauma/Abuse
- Family history

I've always felt as if mental health was an important thing for people to be aware of. Because to me anything dealing with health is important , but as you stated mental health deals with social , emotion health , but I was only thinking that it was dealing with social life. But this is a very helpful topic
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post! I had no idea that there 41,000 lives lost a year due to mental illness! Thats a lot! I also had no idea that suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the US. I think that people might not want to talk about mental illness because they feel like it's really not that big of a deal, but clearly it is. I think it is important for others to realize that it is a big deal there are a lot of people that suffer from mental illness. Great post!
ReplyDeleteMental health is a very serious topic and more people should be informed on this subject. People rather ignore it and pretend that it is not there but it is really all around us. I do believe the number of 41,000 could be much more higher bust most people go without being diagnosed. Would you say that you sympathize more for people that have mental illnesses now that you work around them?
ReplyDeleteHonestly.. I don't sympathize with people that have mental illnesses. Now that I work with them, I understand that they don't want to be treated differently. I treat them exactly how I would treat other people
DeleteHey Amijah, thank you for your post! I did not know that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US. I know it occurs but not that much. One of the girls I went to high school committed suicide so it is a hard topic to talk about. I think more people need to be more aware about mental health and how serious it is
ReplyDeleteOne in five American adults is a crazy number! Wow. Very serious topic. Good post. I hope to read about some different types of mental illnesses in future posts. Mental Health care is definitely a growing need in our country!
ReplyDeleteBeing aware of how serious mental illnesses are is important. Though they are different, I don't think they should be treated differently. I'm sure they wouldn't want to either. I was not aware suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the US, that's insane.
ReplyDeleteAmijah,
ReplyDeleteThis hits home for me. Growing up I saw my father battle depression due to an incident that happened to my baby sister, then my parents got divorced and as my dad got out of his, my mom became very depressed and still battles it. Even married again, she battles every day. People do not fully understand depression and may think that have been depressed but do not have the slightest idea. I have battled it twice and it is the absolute worst feeling and the pain seems never ending. I do not wish depression on anyone. It takes months, years to get over and there is not a set day or a magic pill that can take it away forever. Sydney is writing blogs on Family Health History and this is crucial for me considering I have two parents who have been depressed and one still is. It scares me but I know that I am a strong person and that even if it took a long time to get out of, I would never want to feel like that again. Thank you x1000000 for this blog. It is a serious issue that is almost hidden or unspoken of it seems.
You're so welcome! I know that depression is often overlooked and I have my personal experience with it.
DeleteThis is a great topic you chose. So many people don't understand the true meaning of mental health and I feel you did a great job at explaining it. I know 3 people who are considered to have a mental illness 2 born with it and 1 who grew into having a mental illness as a adult.
ReplyDeleteI find mental health to be very important. Because we can not psychically see if someone has a mental illness, it is sometimes forgotten about. Taking care of your mental state is very important. I find it especially important for us college students because we have so much on our plate that we tend to focus on ourselves. Great post!
ReplyDeleteAmijah, the topic of mental health is something I believe definitely gets overlooked. Working at a hospital, we see many individuals with mental health issues, some don't even know they have underlying disorders. Mental health patients are harder to take care of in my opinion because it is harder to tell how they are feeling since you physically cannot see them hurting. I wish there were more options for help and assistance when it comes to individuals with mental health issues.
